•  AFN scraps office of Performance Director

...Nesiama, Onikeku, others head Committees

In a bid to add some fillips to it's activities and programs the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has scrapped the position of its Performance Director. 


The AFN Board had dissolved all its Committees earlier this month after serving for two years as agreed at the beginning of the tenure in 2021.


We gathered that the AFN has set up eight Committees that will help drive it's various programs, events and projects and it named retired Commodore Omasteye Nesiama as head of the Competition Committee.


Other members of the Competition Committee are:

✓ Samuel Onikeku

✓ Maria Wophill

✓ Dr. Solomon Alao

✓ Henry Okorie

✓ Prof. Lucas Ojunjimi

✓ Bolakale Alake 

✓ Rita Mosindi - Secretary


The other Committees are Technical Committee, Ethnics, Disciplinary and Safeguarding Committee, Budget, Marketing and Sponsorhip Committee, Media and Publicity, Education and Youth Development Committee, Medical and Anti-Doping Commission as well as Road Race Committee.


Samuel Onikeku who is a member of the Competition Committee and a also a member of the Medical and Anti-Doping Commission is heading the Technical Committee.

A one time Scribe of AFN who is also a former Nigeria international, Maria Wophill will oversee the Ethnics, Disciplinary and Safeguarding Committee. She will be working with:

✓ Retired Commodore Omatseye Nesiama 

✓ Professor Emmanuel Ojeme

✓ Chief Ellias Usman Gora (Esq)

✓ Rita Mosindi - secretary


The Nigeria athletics governing body has carefully assemble a Budget, Marketing and Sponsorship Committee that will help it get the much needed funds to achieve it's goals and objectives. Dr. Solomon Alao will serve as it Chairman.


Seasoned sports journalist and athletics writer Dare Esan, Professor Olatunde Makanju, Dr. Isaac Ogada, Mrs. Yemini Tinubu, Babajide Odedeji are all members of the powerful Budget, Marketing and Sponsorship Committee while Rita Mosindi is the secretary.


Multi award winning journalist Gowon Akpodonor who heads the Media and Publicity Committee has a cast of seasoned journalists to work with. The list include the editor of First Zealmediacast Blog, Maxwell Kumoye, the CEO of Faks Media, Ohis Asian, Ben Efe, Uzor Odigbo of the Niche Newspapers, Felicia Nwaokorie and David Ngobua as members while Rita Mosindi is the secretary.


The Education and Youth Development Committee has Professor Emmanuel Ojeme as Chairman, with Rosa Collins, Honourable Usman Yusuf Dahiru, Maria Wophill, Professor Okpako as members and Rita Mosindi is the secretary.


Medical and Anti-Doping Commission has Professor Ken Anugwaje as chairman, with Victor Okorie, Dr. Paul Onyeudo, Samuel Onikeku, Pharmacist Femi Ayoride, Dr. Bukola Bojuwoye, Dr. Effi Usen, while Taldang Tanlmu is the secretary.


The Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission Honourable Yusuf Alli will chair the Road Race Committee.


He will be supported by an athletic encyclopedia Olukayode Thomas,  Retired Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, Solomon Aliu, Olatunji Olawole, Stephen Nuhu, Mrs. Tayo Popoola as members and Rita Mosindi is the scribe of the Committee.


The AFN Liaison Officers are Taiwo Ariyo, Abiola Onakoyo and Rita Mosindi.
