70 players from 17 States of the Federation have confirmed their participation in the scrabble event at the ongoing 7th National Youth Games in Asaba, the Delta State capital, South South, Nigeria.

The players will be competing for honours in six categories. Boys and girls doubles, mixed doubles, boys and girls singles and the team event for boys and girls.

A look at the numbers of players in Asaba, Nigeria's Sporting capital shows that 37 of the scrabble contingent are boys and 33 are girls and all the Sporting Zones of the country are represented.

South South Zone is heavily represented by Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Rivers while Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau are holding it down for North Central Zone and it's Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun and Oyo are from the West.

Anambra and Imo are the touch bearers from the South East, Kebbi are the only State from North West and Adamawa are North East sole team for the scrabble event of the 7th National Youth Games.

A good number of players who shone brilliantly at the maiden edition of the African Youth Scrabble Championship in Lagos State last month are in attendance in Asaba.

That exclusive list is headed by Clinton Imode, Abdul Qudus Aliuo, Saviour Onazi, Pereowei Edide, Philip Akhabue, John Daniel, Peace Adegunte as well as Demilade Lawrence.

All eyes will be on Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Kwara, Lagos, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo and Rivers for a good showing at the Games.

The new Multi Purpose Hall of Stephen Keshi Stadium that played host to the scrabble event at the 21st National Sports Festival last year is the same venue for the Youth Scrabble competition.

The President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka says the young wordsmith in Asaba for the National Youth Games (NYG) are the future of the game of words not only in Nigeria but the world.

“The NSF will continue to open up the space for the game of scrabble to blossom, by reaching out to schools where we can catch them young.” Toke Aka said.

The NSF President stated that at the last African Youth Scrabble Championship in Lekki-Lagos, Team Nigeria took all the honours at stake and so the battle of Asaba will be hard, challenging, tough and equally exciting.

“We know most of the youngsters in attendance, we also what they can bring to the board, however there will be lots of upsets as new faces are ready to show their word power, tactical play, board management, mental strength and as well as their dexterity on the board.” Engineer Toke Aka added.

At the last National Sports Festival 14 out of the 27 States that competed had at a medal to show for participating in the scrabble event.

13th African Games:Minister of Sports Development Charges Athletes to Conquer Africa

13th African Games:Minister of Sports Development Charges Athletes to Conquer Africa _Says Nigeria is solidly behind them_ The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh on Tuesday the 5th of March charged Nigeria’s contingent to the All Africa Games taking place in Ghana to conquer Africa.  Addressing the athletes onboard the aircraft scheduled to take them to Ghana for the tournament shortly before takeoff at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the Minister assured them that the entire nation was solidly behind them.  He further stated that although some of the athletes may be representing the country for the first time, the tournament affords them the opportunity to make the nation proud. Senator Enoh urged the departing athletes to build on the strong performance of the country in the previous games by posting a strong performance that will ensure that Nigeria emerges the best in Africa. “ Let me remind you that you carry the hopes and as...

Revitalize Bako Kontagora Stadium, Football Stakeholder Urges Governor Bago

Revitalize Bako Kontagora Stadium, Football Stakeholder Urges Governor Bago Mallam Shuaibu Yakubu, a respected football stakeholder in Niger State, has fervently appealed to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to sustain and enhance sports facilities within the state, particularly focusing on the development of stadiums. Yakubu, who has an extensive background in Nigerian football with experience at Bayelsa United, Elkanemi Warriors, Abia Warriors, Kano Pillars, Rivers United, and currently serves as the General Manager of Sporting Supreme Football Club of Abuja, emphasized the urgency of addressing the current infrastructural deficiencies. He stressed that many football teams in the state are grappling with significant challenges due to a lack of funding and inadequate facilities. “Our beloved state team is struggling because they are forced to play their league games away from home. I am appealing to the government to intervene and address these issues,” Yakubu said. He lauded Governor...

States Football Associations Should Adopt the Ekiti FA Model - Dr. Babatunde 'Tee' Akinbinu

Akinkunle Bolarinwa  Executive Board Member of the Ondo State Football Association, Dr. Babatunde 'Tee' Akinbinu has advised State Football Associations Chairmen in Nigeria to borrow the template for football development exemplified by Ekiti State Football Association in the last three and half years. "The reason why Ekiti State FA works and looks so beautiful is because Mr Bayo Lanlege the Ekiti FA chairman threw his hat in the ring and is leading from the front on matters of football development in Ekiti State without any subvention funding from the Government of Ekiti State." The sagacious Sports Physician asserts that Nigeria needs pragmatic leadership to lead the new path for football development.  "It is a huge irony that I am in Ondo and he is in Ekiti, really. If we had 30 State FA Chairmen in Nigeria like Mr Lanlege of the Ekiti State FA, out of the 37 State FA Chairmen we have in Nigeria, we would NOT be talking about bad governance in football admini...
